The Recruiting Column

Edmeston looks after its own.

A volunteer company only stays ready if the next neighbor steps up. You do not need experience and you do not need to buy a thing. The company trains you and equips you. What it asks for is you.

  • No experience required. You are trained from the ground up, alongside people who have done it for years.
  • Training is provided. Skills, drills, and gear come from the company, not your wallet.
  • Protect your own town. The call you answer is for the road you live on and the people next door.
  • Give what you can. Firefighting, driving, support, fundraising. There is a place for every willing neighbor.

Stand behind the company

Support the company

A volunteer company runs on the village that backs it. If you cannot ride the trucks, you can still keep them rolling. The company posts its current needs and any events on its Facebook page.

  • Follow the page and share what the company posts, so more neighbors see the call.
  • Ask about giving or lending a hand at an event by messaging the page or calling the office.
  • Spread the word that the company is always looking for the next volunteer.

Be ready at home

Most of what keeps a rural home safe is done long before the trucks are needed. A few habits give volunteers a real head start.

  • Test smoke alarms and keep fresh batteries on every floor.
  • Post your 911 address where responders can read it from the road, day or night.
  • Keep driveways and lanes clear so apparatus can reach the house.
  • Clear brush and dry growth back from buildings, especially in a dry season.
In an emergency, call 911 first. Give your location, then the nature of the emergency.
